Chapter Seven

The next day, the snow still came down in fluffy flakes, and the scene outside their cozy cabin was definitely one of a winter wonderland. The pine trees were all covered like fat, happy tree ghosts, and the blanket of snow gave everything a clean coating that felt a lot like a fresh start.

There was something about a good snowfall that Sam loved and it was perfect for the start of the wedding and holiday festivities. After sleeping in and spending her morning lounging around in her pajamas, Sam looked forward to skating. Well, it wasn’t the skating so much that she looked forward to; it was the fact that all morning their friends had been arriving and soon they’d all be together at the pond to kick off the wedding celebrations. Plus, she was secretly hoping that having their friends around would help deflect some of the pressure to plan every detail with Beth off of her. One could hope, anyway.

Sam took her time to finish her cup of coffee next to the Christmas tree. It was a gorgeous tree, decorated with animal ornaments that had been fashioned from pinecones, branches, and other rustic elements. For color, a strand of faux berries wound throughout the branches, and the twinkling lights brought it all together. But there was nothing under the tree.

Sam’s eyes dropped to where the presents should have been. She’d meant to go shopping for Trent and pick up a few things, but with the craziness of Beth’s announcement and packing up for the Lodge, she’d totally let it slip her mind. She also knew he didn’t want anything and was absolutely impossible to shop for. Not that it mattered. Sam still planned to surprise him on Christmas Day. She’d been tossing around the idea of taking him on a holiday somewhere hot. Maybe even that special island, Eden, that Kylie, one of her waitresses at the Grizzly Paw, talked about.

A smile crept across her face. Yes. A romantic and sexy trip to a Caribbean island was exactly what she’d get him. Even if she had to iron out the details later, she could still print it out on a piece of paper and wrap it up.

Feeling better about her decision, Sam put her almost empty coffee cup down and stretched her arms over her head. Trent had left early to go “take care of some business with Jeff,” whatever that meant. Secretly, she was glad to be alone for a little bit. The sleigh ride the night before had been amazing and incredibly romantic, but it had been missing something. A wedding proposal maybe. She hated herself for thinking that, for ruining what had been a fabulous night with thoughts that it could have been more, but she couldn’t help it.

The setting had been perfect for a proposal, and when he took her out, that had been exactly what she’d been thinking. Even though she’d sworn to stop obsessing about her own life and to focus on Beth and Slade’s wedding and just being at the Lodge, the feelings had snuck in.
